Weligama is the south coast's friendliest surf town — a wide, sheltered bay with gentle beginner waves, surf schools, and easy-going beachfront cafés, a short ride east of Galle.
Around 30 kilometres away by road, Weligama is about forty minutes from Galle along the coast road. Its broad, shallow bay is where most visitors to Sri Lanka take their first surf lesson — the whitewater is forgiving, the boards are plentiful, and instructors are used to complete beginners. Just offshore, the tiny island of Taprobane and the famous stilt fishermen make for classic south-coast photos.
This is an easy, popular route for a morning surf, a beach day, or a lunch stop, and it slots neatly onto the way to or from Mirissa. We are happy to arrange a return pickup so you can surf, dry off, and ride home without hunting for a tuk-tuk, or to wait while you take a lesson and grab a bite afterwards.
Weligama also works well as part of a relaxed coastal day. Combine it with the reefs and beaches around Midigama and Ahangama, the snorkelling at Koggala, or a sunset stop in Unawatuna on the way back to Galle. Tell us how you would like to spend the day and we will build the timing around it.
